What to Expect From the Foster Care Adoption Process

Becoming a foster or adoptive parent can be difficult, but with a clear understanding of the process you’ll need to go through, and the proper support of trained professionals that can guide you through that path, it may be simpler than you think.

In the U.S., the average time for a child to be in foster care is less than two years, and more than half of the children in foster care are adopted by their foster families. In addition to the satisfaction of making a positive difference in a child’s life, becoming a foster parent can come with a variety of benefits. Many foster programs provide financial and educational resources to support the child, and foster parents themselves can often receive financial aid to help them raise the child. Eligible foster parents can also adopt a child who is in their care without going through the sometimes long adoption process. Ready to get started? Once you decide to move forward with foster care adoption, you will then be required to:

  • Attend an “orientation” — This meeting is a way for you to gain a better understanding of what foster care is and to help you determine if the requirements of being a foster parent are something that you can manage. Topics discussed during orientation include the process of becoming a foster parent, the children who are part of the system, the tools that are available to support you, and the pay that you can expect as it is based upon the child’s family of origin category and placement of the child.
  • Complete an application and home study — If you decide that you want to be a foster parent, you will then complete an application with the goal of being accepted into the foster care program. The approval process can take as long as six months and will include the completion of a home study and background check to determine if you are eligible to adopt a foster child in the United States.
  • Receive your foster care license — Once you have been approved, you will be required to complete the training program that is meant to prepare you to parent a foster child so that you can become certified to receive a foster child.
  • Look for a match — Finally, once you are approved to receive a foster child, you can begin looking for your child.

Given the involvement of an array of agencies and professionals, the foster adoption process can at times feel a bit overwhelming. The Law Office of Tiffany L. Andrews, P.C. is here to help you! Working with our team ensures that you will never feel in over your head.

  • “Amazing Family Law Attorney!”
I would strongly recommend Mrs. Andrews for any family law issues. She was my attorney for over a year. In that time she was focused and diligent. Not once did any paperwork get rejected for clerical errors. Mrs. Andrews worked tirelessly and made it a point to conduct my case in the most cost-effective manner possible for me.

Extremely knowledgeable of the family law issues confronting me. Highly motivated to assist and involve me in the process so there are no surprises. So far I am satisfied with the process and would highly recommend this law firm to take care of your legal issues.

  • “Professional and Effective”
I retained Tiffany Andrews to accomplish my divorce and am pleased with the service provided. My ex-wife was very uncooperative at times and prolonged the divorce unnecessarily. Tiffany was able to move things along and eventually get her to complete her part of the necessary paperwork. Further, I am in the military and was deployed while the process was ongoing. Even though I was half a world away Tiffany and her staff were able to keep me abreast of the situation and worked with me to sign paperwork and keep things rolling. I would highly recommend Tiffany Andrews to those in need of legal services.

  • “Child Custody Case”

Tiffany was asked to represent me in court as my primary attorney was called to attend another court case.

Tiffany acted in a very professional manner, was very supportive, Tiffany made sure that she has a good understanding of my case prior to attending court. Whilst we waited for the court to open Tiffany was very attentive to me, asking me if I had any questions, trying to relax me even though this is a highly confrontational custody case. During the wait time, Tiffany noticed that the other attorney was acting inappropriately and immediately challenged his position, to which he apologized.

Once in court Tiffany took the lead putting forward our case, she did this in a well-structured way. Each point had solid reasoning and when the apposing council tried to interrupt Tiffany politely asked him to wait until she had completed his argument. Tiffany mentioned to the judge the incident in the waiting area and the Judge was very clear that this behavior was unacceptable. The judge listed intently to Tiffany points and contentions, the facts were very clear and he was able to make the required decisions based on her submission without further clarification on my custody request.

Despite the fact Tiffany was covering for another attorney, I could not have asked for better support. She is an outstanding attorney, very knowledgeable on custody cases and the rules relating to custody. I would have not had a second thought engaging Tiffany as my primary attorney or making a recommendation to anybody who needs an excellent divorce/custody lawyer.
Thank you for your support - you were outstanding

  • “Protected My Interests”
Tiffany has been dealing with my divorce for going on 3 years. Just wrapped up last week. Unfortunately, that's how long my divorce took. But she stuck by and fought for me even though the divorce laws are skewed to basically screw me. In the end, we were able to get a final judgment that I was comfortable with. She was always reachable and responded timely. All in all, she is a great lawyer who will do what's in your best interest.

  • “International Service of Process and Divorce Guidance”
Tiffany was very fast to respond, she was direct and very very knowledgeable. She took the time to quickly understand my situation and also advise on the correct process surrounding serving documents overseas. I was very satisfied with her level of prompt and above and beyond guidance. Thank you.
