What to Expect From the Foster Care Adoption Process
Becoming a foster or adoptive parent can be difficult, but with a clear understanding of the process you’ll need to go through and the proper support of trained professionals who can guide you through that path, it may be simpler than you think.
In the U.S., the average time for a child to be in foster care is less than two years, and more than half of the children in foster care are adopted by their foster families. In addition to the satisfaction of making a positive difference in a child’s life, becoming a foster parent can come with a variety of benefits. Many foster programs provide financial and educational resources to support the child, and foster parents themselves can often receive financial aid to help them raise the child. Eligible foster parents can also adopt a child who is in their care without going through the sometimes long adoption process. Ready to get started? Once you decide to move forward with foster care adoption, you will then be required to:
- Attend an “orientation” — This meeting is a way for you to gain a better understanding of what foster care is and to help you determine if the requirements of being a foster parent are something that you can manage. Topics discussed during orientation include the process of becoming a foster parent, the children who are part of the system, the tools that are available to support you, and the pay that you can expect as it is based upon the child’s family of origin category and placement of the child.
- Complete an application and home study — If you decide that you want to be a foster parent, you will then complete an application with the goal of being accepted into the foster care program. The approval process can take as long as six months and will include the completion of a home study and background check to determine if you are eligible to adopt a foster child in the United States.
- Receive your foster care license — Once you have been approved, you will be required to complete the training program that is meant to prepare you to parent a foster child so that you can become certified to receive a foster child.
- Look for a match — Finally, once you are approved to receive a foster child, you can begin looking for your child.
