What to Expect From the Foster Care Adoption Process

Becoming a foster or adoptive parent can be difficult, but with a clear understanding of the process you’ll need to go through, and the proper support of trained professionals that can guide you through that path, it may be simpler than you think.

In the U.S., the average time for a child to be in foster care is less than two years, and more than half of the children in foster care are adopted by their foster families. In addition to the satisfaction of making a positive difference in a child’s life, becoming a foster parent can come with a variety of benefits. Many foster programs provide financial and educational resources to support the child, and foster parents themselves can often receive financial aid to help them raise the child. Eligible foster parents can also adopt a child who is in their care without going through the sometimes long adoption process. Ready to get started? Once you decide to move forward with foster care adoption, you will then be required to:

  • Attend an “orientation” — This meeting is a way for you to gain a better understanding of what foster care is and to help you determine if the requirements of being a foster parent are something that you can manage. Topics discussed during orientation include the process of becoming a foster parent, the children who are part of the system, the tools that are available to support you, and the pay that you can expect as it is based upon the child’s family of origin category and placement of the child.
  • Complete an application and home study — If you decide that you want to be a foster parent, you will then complete an application with the goal of being accepted into the foster care program. The approval process can take as long as six months and will include the completion of a home study and background check to determine if you are eligible to adopt a foster child in the United States.
  • Receive your foster care license — Once you have been approved, you will be required to complete the training program that is meant to prepare you to parent a foster child so that you can become certified to receive a foster child.
  • Look for a match — Finally, once you are approved to receive a foster child, you can begin looking for your child.

  • “Superior Customer Service”

I was very lucky to have found Atty Andrews online because she addressed all of my questions and concerns over the phone for 30 mins without coming across as someone who is only interested in me as a client for money. She went above and beyond the phone consultation and normally there's a $150 consultation fee that she waived.

She was very helpful and honest and I felt that she genuinely had my best interest in mind and not her business for profit. She even recommended for me hire an attorney in Texas vs California because it is the most beneficial for my family and the one that makes sense the most. I would have loved to hire Atty Andrews to represent our family, but we will listen to all of her advice and recommendations. Thank you, Atty Andrews!!!

  • “Excellent Process and Assistance”
I'd like to thank Tiffany for her advice. I've been divorced for over a year and am still trying to collect on the settlement agreement. I had a question about the legal interest and if it's collectible and she said definitely! as long as the judgment doesn't preclude it. She was extremely helpful - also offering other remedies to assist in the collection of the funds. I would definitely call her again if I need more help.
